BSNL union opposes merger with MTNL
New Delhi, Oct. 11. (PTI): BSNL
Employees Union has opposed the government proposal to merge BSNL into MTNL,
saying it would suit only the requirements of MNCs and big businesses.
The present proposal to disinvest
five per cent of BSNL is fraught with dire consequences and the best way is to
merge MTNL into BSNL after buying back the MTNL shares from the market, the
union said in a press release.
The government had announced
three options including five per cent disinvestment in BSNL to facilitate the
merger between the two telecom PSUs.
The other two options are merging
BSNL into MTNL and creating a holding company.
The union said BSNL has
maintained its financial viability and the government has yet to reimburse Rs 11,000
crore to BSNL for providing village connections.
"BSNL Employees Union
demands the government and the Communications Minister not to disinvest shares
of BSNL which will be against the interests of the nation and people," it
said.
